What's our top tips on looking after your silk duvets?

We know how frustrating it can be to take home your new bedding only for it to be ruined in a couple of months. That's why here at Cocoon Pure Silk we pride ourselves in being able to highlight best practices for general care in order to extend the life of your luxurious silk duvet.

The ability to clean your silk duvet at home means you can easily maintain the quality of your original purchase.

General care:

  • Do not wash your duvet in a washing machine as the agitation action combined with water will disturb the silk fill.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Do not wring.
  • Do not iron.
  • Do not shake strongly when wet as this may displace the hand layered silk floss.
  • Dry flat or hung over several sections of clothes line. Do not dry over a heater or expose to excessive radiant heat.

We recommend that you:

  • Always use a removable cover to protect the cotton shell from dirt and spot stains.
  • Air indoors or outdoors every other month, ideally for at lest a few hours.

This should be all that is needed to keep your silk duvet fresh and clean.

Cocoon Pure Silk Duvets are not intended for use in circumstances where frequent complete cleaning is necessary.
Do not Dry Clean your duvet as the chemicals used could damage the silk.
Only use wet cleaning when absolutely essential.

Should your duvet require deeper cleaning, please follow these steps:

  • Isolate the soiled area in need of spot cleaning.
  • Hand wash in cold water with a very gentle liquid detergent washing agent.
    • A combined hair shampoo/conditioner for dry hair can give good results.
    • A special silk washing agent may be used
    • Do not use bleach or strong detergents
    • Wool mix agent is not recommended.
  • Rinse thoroughly and squeeze excess water by pressing the two sides together.

If total immersion is absolutely necessary:

  • Fold the duvet onto a rectangular shape and keep it in this shape during the entire washing process to avoid disturbing the silk fill.
  • Immerse it gently in a premix of cold water and mild liquid washing agent in your bath or shower recess and press the water through the duvet with your hands to remove the soiling.
  • Drain the water without moving the duvet then press it with your hands progressively to remove the washing solution.
  • To rinse, without moving the duvet, refill with fresh water and repeat the process of pressing on it with your hands then drain again as in previous step.
  • Once you've removed as much water as is practical with gentle hand pressure, carefully lift the duvet from underneath keeping it in its folded shape and place it evenly in your washing machine.
  • Set the machine to spin only and this will remove as much water as possible from the duvet.
